first go stand in a crowd of your competitors

Me: "Why are you working day and night?"

Christopher: "We're shipping our product in two weeks."

Me: "What, you are? That's wonderful! That must be very exciting for you."

Christopher: "From the outside, the observer is always talking about how exciting it is. But ask the person who is launching in two weeks 'Are you excited?' and they'll say, 'No, I want to kill myself and everyone around me.'"

Huh. When I "launch" (the industry I work in is a little different), it is gruelling, but I don't remember homicidal rage. Certainly an intense desire to be done with it. Come to think of it, it probably helps (for me) that I haven't been a programmer for years and years; they generally have it rougher.

(Huh, the CAPTCHA has stacked a 'w' next to two 'v's, or possibly vice-versa. Yay.)
