lack of antarctica

The Antarctica travel company emailed me today. As many commenters noted, their ship M/S Explorer sank last November.

They bought a new boat, and are fixing it up. Previously they expected to finish retrofitting it before the 2009 trips.

However, it turns out they won't be done in time, so they're cancelling all their Antarctica trips until 2010.

:(

I'm so disappointed. That could have been me on that boat!

See? See? That name is a bad omen (re: MS Explorer)!

Hello Niniane, Why don't you search for cruises in Alaska or in the Norwegians Fjords? :) I have heard they are great..

Maybe for the best...doesn't look safe to me. We don't want our Niniane in danger. "Google Antarctica" could be an idea for a 20% project.

Your last comment made me laugh aloud!!

If you're still feeling arctic, I recommend Greenland. It's supposed to be absolutely gorgeous with cute little towns on the coast. Don't think there's any penguins tho.

You can see penguins in southern Chile though. Go waaaay down to the bottom tip.

Is there only one tour company that travels to Antarctica? Google tells me otherwise. Don't give up yet!

I was so looking forward to our long chats on the cold deck of the M/S Explorer. Let's book that trip on Virgin Galactic instead? They are supposedly launching in 2009.

I'm hoping that was a John K. Lin impersonator, but I have a cold fear that it's not.

Yeah, cree-pee. Or (I hope) I'm just not getting the joke.

arc - I guess you didn't see my comments on Niniane's original post on anticipating Antarctica...

I guess my attempts at humor sometimes generate cold fear...

In my defense, that was around two weeks ago and I shouldn't be expected to remember things that far back. (Any things, really, not just incidental blog comments.)

Anyways, I went back and re-read it. With all relevant context now fresh in my mind, I still say it sounds stalker-y. {shrug}

I would not suggest a trip to Wisconsin in the spring. Although in some areas there is the nice smell of pig in the air after a nice long winter. And, if you like to gamble, the weather has all sorts of random chance to it. One hour it could be nice then next it could drop 20 degrees.

I saw this news story just now:

Seventy-four tourists on a cruise ship that ran aground in icy Antarctic waters were being evacuated on Wednesday as officials sought ways to dislodge the vessel, the Argentine Navy said.

It was the second rescue effort mounted in just two months for a cruise ship carrying travelers eager to catch a glimpse of the area's icebergs, seals, penguins and whales.

Stay safe.
