Yesterday I ordered milk tea at a cafe in Taipei University.
Me: "One large milk tea, with tapioca."
Cashier: "Do you have a student ID? You get a discount."
Me: [thinking] "Yay! I look young enough to be a college student!"
Cashier: "Or a faculty ID will work too."

You win some. You lose some. Sometimes you do both within seconds of each other.

Ha ha ha. That was funny. I love being carded (sometimes)still.
nooooo! ><
btw, it's awesome that you can do your work all over the world..
I think the experience is cheapened by occurring at a university. Now, if you get carded in an area not frequented by younger people, then that's something else. (that said, I could buy that you look young enough to be a college student, N.)
Hahah
Is it a trait in Taipei that people lack tact.
Not actually that they lack tact.
I have found in many parts of the world that people are brutally honest for Western people.
When learning some languages and then actually listening... you hear people openly calling other people (to their face) fat, bald, not pretty, possibly even ugly and maybe the worse one.. typical.
Therefore I live in Silicone Valley where nodody would remind me that I am not perfect.
Heh! That reminds me of my (usually also very fleeting) happiness when -- at a dance at Stanford -- one of the kids there asks me "So, hey, what year are you?"
"...or I guess you graduated a ways back, right?"
Adam Lasnik, why are you going to Stanford dances (presumably undergrad dances)?
