One of my friends was having a bout of perfectionism lately. It reminded me of the best advice I ever heard on this topic.
Six or seven years ago, I was chatting with a friend from SIGGRAPH.
Me: [obsessively nitpicking over whatever I was working on]
Mark: "Why are you being so perfectionist?"
Me: "I want to make this perfect!"
Mark: "Michael Jackson wants to be perfect too, and look at him!"
Ha ha ha... Michael Jackson is so screwed up! I hope you're not turning into a Michael Jackson...
ReplyDeleteIt's a really valid point.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of a hilarious Simpsons episode that made light of Howard Hughes' situation (paraphrased):
ReplyDeleteSmithers: "About those jars of urine, sir?"
(motions towards a closet filled with hundreds of used mason jars)
Burns: "No, we'll keep those for now..."
(holding a toy model of a sea plane)
Burns: "Now, get in the plane."
Smithers: "Um, sir, it's just a model..."
(levels a revolver at Smithers)
Burns: "I said, get in the plane."
Smithers: "Um, yes sir."

ReplyDeleteSayeth the Ze.
I was walking on the street in Park Slope, and a guy drove past on a motorcycle, speakers booming what I thought was a crazy remix of Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin’ Something.” It was the “Mama se, mama sa, mama cu sa” chant, but in a deep bass voice over an afro-funk beat. I looked it up on the internet to figure out what it was, and it turned out not to be a remix at all.
