It's a 9-year-old Honda Accord, which is by definition a better car than mine. Since I have a 9-year-old Honda Civic. A pic of my car, from when I was robbed a few years ago:

With gas at $4 a gallon, its kind of hard to lose with a civic.
ReplyDeleteI think humility is one of the more underrated traits of a person. I mean I see the exact opposite all the time, someone driving by in a huge escalade bumping their rap music with their spinning rims, and everytime I see them I think to myself, they probably dont have a dime else to their name. Accords and civics are fine. I lean towards the civic more now thanks to gas prices.
filling up for 20 bucks was nice.
But metal, the amount you pay for a fill-up is only dependent on the size of your gas tank. I can only assume that with a 5 gallon tank, you either drive very infrequently or fill up many times a week.
ReplyDeleteMy car has a 21 gallon tank but gets 31MPG. An $80 fillup, but very infrequently.
Both are much better than the '94 Ford Aspire/Expire I currently drive. It's an angry red lawn mower with tinted windows, sans A/C. Sigh. Still, have not had a car payment since '97, and the gas mileage is decent. I will probably drive it until the wheels fall off.

ReplyDeleteMy first car out of university was a BMW, which was soon replaced by a Saab. These were both in Europe. When I moved here, I got a good deal on a 2-year old Accord, 17,000 miles, and am still driving it. No problems whatever. Reliability is king, in my opinion. I really don't understand the need to have a huge SUV for city driving. I mean, sure if you're on a ranch and need it -- but this isn't the jungle, urban or otherwise. You simply don't need a monstrocity to drive on 101 every day.

ReplyDeleteI can't believe that I'm driving a car that is more than half of my age.
What you should do is get the most economical car you can, then install the biggest petrol tank you can find. Should work out quite well, that or keep a large tank at home, since prices keep going up the long run you end up winning.

I feel much better. my first car out of graduate school is Civic, my wife's first car after graduate school is Accord, both have mileage arund 130K, Accord never had any problem. Civic did have some problem but warranty covers it.

I drove a 85 Tercel for 10 years(through HS,college, and grad school), and a 92 Accord for 10 years out of grad school. My 3rd car is a 01 BMW 5-series, as my Accord was T-boned by a red-light runner(very scary), so I needed some German steel around myself and my family.:-)
