It really gets on my nerves that so many web sites have their own messaging system. Why would I want a yelp.com inbox?? Just send yelp messages to my email address!
Ditto Facebook.
Ditto YouTube.
Ditto LinkedIn.
When questioned, one founder said, "What, I should send my traffic to Gmail instead of back to my own site?"
YES. It's a much better user experience!!!
In unrelated news, I'll be in Taiwan over the next week, for Wei-chao's wedding.
More than one person said, "Have a good time! Don't eat too many puppies."
A lot of sites see control of user's information as central to their competitive advantage. Come to think of it, all the OpenSocial networks should share an inbox. Unfortunately, I'm not at Google to make that happen. Just leave a comment on my page if you want to respond.
ReplyDeleteIs she marrying an Asian dude?
ReplyDeleteWhat drives me nuts is that these social networks wont put the text of the scrap/message/whatever in the email notification they send you, forcing you to click through.
ReplyDeleteI agree with some sort of unified messaging approach - maybe as an "RSS"-type feed into Gmail or whatever mail service/system one uses. However, I can understand why all individual services maintain their own systems.
ReplyDeleteHuh? I don't think Taiwan is known for "dog" for cuisine.
Have a great time in Taiwan! Try to drop by Din Tai Fung - the best dumplings in the world! (been to the one in Taipei, Shanghai, Beijing and Arcadia, CA!)

ReplyDeleteDude, you had better be kidding, because *it's called SMTP*.
Good point. Though, is there an open API for such things? coComment is somewhat it, but not there.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, it's best to have a neutral site that handles it all, ala coComment.
Would be interesting when there's one like this. :)
Have a good time! Don't eat too many puppies.
ReplyDeleteWell, I don't think the Facebook and other messaging systems use SMTP / POP mail system to send messages within their site/community (but I could be wrong).
ReplyDeleteAlso, since I am not a software developer, so I was just trying to, by analogy, reflect what I do when subscribing to feeds in some unified manner, not actually define the protocol as to how one might accomplish this.
while in Taiwan, check out the play Countdown
ReplyDeleteSo, I understand "Mongolian BBQ" originated in Taiwan, for what that's worth.
ReplyDeleteBe sure to tell us if the food lives up to "Eat Drink Man Woman", though.
>"Ditto YouTube"
It strikes me that YouTube and Orkut, at least, ought to be more mail oriented since they're Google products and could benefit from the tie-in to other Google properties like GMail. (Of course, Orkut also wrote its own horrendously inferior web board system rather than use a useful one. Even the Google Groups interface woulda been better.) ... ooops, I've digressed into my standard rant.
There's just so much hubris these days on these "social networking" sites. Thoughts of Billion $ valuations make the founders/executives believe that they have created THE entity that the rest of the Internet should revolve around (esp evident in Facebook).
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for this whole bubble to blow up so we can go back to the pre-Web2.0 days and cure my Techcrunch addiction once and for all!
> Is she marrying an Asian dude?
ReplyDeleteWei-chao is a (Taiwanese) guy. He is marrying a Taiwanese girl.

ReplyDeleteHmm. I need to come to their defense a little bit, and say that at least ONE of the people in the accused category is actually an extremely nice person. :)
Why do talk to us as if we know who Wei-chao is?
ReplyDeleteorkut? LOL
ReplyDeleteDid you try to persuade the bride not to marry an Asian guy?
